(Show me something by him recorded by 1960 that won't.) The rhythm sections are sublime, including Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke, Curley Russell and Art Blakey, Tommy Potter and Arthur Taylor. The set includes some of Monk's earliest recorded solo piano pieces, which in their lovely breaks and lurches and musical pratfalls represented an art form unto itself. And Miles Davis's 1954 ''Bags' Groove'' session, recorded with Monk and three-fourths of the Modern Jazz Quartet -- one of the best sessions in all of jazz -- is here in its entirety.
