This auction is for one pair (two pieces) RARE vintage Jörgen Schou JS type 0.32M no.384 line transformers in a nice condition. Made in Denmark.
These are considered to be some of the finest step up transformers in the world.
No.384 transformer was designed and produced especially for the Ortofon SPU Moving Coil ultra-low impedance cartridge with impedance about 1-3 Ohm.
The SPU is one of the few cartridges from the 60's than can hold its own with modern examples and especially so when re-tipped with the improved profile diamonds that are now available.
The No. 384 transformers might also suit other ultra-low impedance cartridges, such as Supex or EMT.
These transformers are recommended only for the ULTRA-LOW impedance cartridges. Please make sure and check if these transformers will suit to your cartridge!!!
This item comes from an older gentleman, a true audio enthusiast and a music lover, who decided to sell out his collection. He was using these transformers with the original version of Ortofon MC20 cartridge, if I am not mistaken.
The transformers are currently wired to provide step up ratio of 1:12 (1:11,55 to be precise) with gain about 21,6 dB.
Also possible to wire them for 1:6 step up ratio, if required.
The transformers are mounted in a very simple diecast alloy box with connectors and wiring (the cover is removed on the photos). The box itself is a very good idea, as it provides excellent shielding against RF interference and also gives an excellent mechanical protection against impacts etc. As for the wiring inside the box, without giving too much credit to it, let's just say it is OK and fully functional. It will give you possibility to hook up the transformers to test and audition in a very quick way. This is a much better start than to run for the soldering iron!
Few comments on the transformers condition:
The printing on one transformer is black, and on the other one is blue. Other than that they are fully identical.
There is a very small slight bump on the top of the "blue" transformer can.
There are traces of green sticky tape on both transformers, most likely from previous mounting. Any attempt to clean up the green goo will effectively remove the original printing from the transformers, and we don't want that, do we?
There is a fair amount of small scratches on both transformers, but nothing rough. Clearly used, but not abused.
Absolutely no rust or anything else like this which sometimes can be seen on these transformers in other offerings.
I have tested these, and they work just fine! The sound is very good. However, as I do not possess an ultra-low cartridge in my stereo setup, I could not give a proper audition to these transformers.
